Over the last two months, Group Leader Cllr Shazna Muzammil has been visiting local charities and community groups across Milton Keynes.
Camphill Communities
Shazna visited Camphill MK, a supported living community for adults with learning disabilities, autism and complex needs. During her visit, Cllr Muzammil toured the site, met with residents and explored the various workshops which included weaving, pottery and baking. The visit was valuable in helping Cllr Muzammil gain a better understanding of supported accommodation and how MKCC can collaborate effectively to assist residents in need of these services.
Milton Keynes Dawoodi Bohra Community
Shazna met with the Milton Keynes Dawoodi Bohra community to catch up and discuss some of their great initiatives such as Project Rise, which addresses global issues such as malnutrition, healthcare and environmental sustainability, and their Zero Food Waste Policy which includes converting organise waste to energy during their large scale events.
Milton Keynes Christian Centre
Milton Keynes Christian Centre run eight social enterprises throughout the city, which provide work experience and training for young people who have struggled with mainstream education. Shazna visited two of the enterprises the Urb Farm and Cycle Saviours.
At the Urb Farm, young people grow a wide range of fruit and veg using environmentally aware techniques and maintain the beds, soil and wider farm site. The fruit and veg are sold at the market on site every Tuesday.
At Cycle Saviours, the young people are trained to refurbish, repair, service and sell bicycles, with the aim of making cycling accessible for all.
Shazna toured both sites, meeting the trainees and getting an insight into how these fantastic enterprises are providing valuable opportunities for our young people to gain hands on experience, life skills and build up confidence.
